Potterton Performa 24, CH ignition goes on and off in a loop

The BG engineer SHOULD have klnow about the return filter and checked it early on with those symptoms.

Soemetimes they have been wrongly fitted to the flow side instead. Often the filter element inside has been removed "to stop it blocking up" the installer would say.

But it would have been obvious if he had taken the simple diagnostic step of measuring the flow and return temperatures at the boiler.

But BG people often seem to not bother with simple diagnostic checks expecting to go directly to common faults on each model as listed on their computers!

Thanks Tony.

I've lived in the property for about 3 years and the on / off cycling only started a few weeks ago and before the BG engineer did any work on the boiler (it is a very distinct noise). So probably not due to filter being fitted incorrectly. Although blockage in the filter could be a possible explanation?

Could it be a problem with the pump?

Some people have difficulty understanding this but the effect on the system is exactly the same regardless of which side the filter has been fitted.

Its a series resistance to the flow!

A blocked filter will reduce the flow and this creates a higher than expected temperature differential.
