Power shower works intermittently

My Mira Power shower works only intermittently.

When I open it up it seems that there is an awful lot of black soot being produced and the motor will only turn over if encouraged to do with a sharp tap on the side of the casing.

Once started it stays working for at least the duration of the shower but will only occasionally restart without intervention. Is there anything that I can do to solve this in the way of overhaul or cleaning? Or is it time to get a new shower?

Time for a new 'un i think. How old is it?

about five years which doesn't seem that old to me.

If you do a google search for mira showers, you will be able to find a site called "showerdoc" or similar, they seem pretty good for mira parts.
