I have a battery operated Response CL6011B Intercom/Doorbell.

I want to use a power supply. A 12V 300 mA one is specified. Would a 12V 1000mA power plug suit, and not be problematic electrically speaking? I ask because I have a 12V 1000mA plug from a cctv camera I could use.

It might, the problem is that the 12 volt DC would need to be ripple free to prevent hum on the speech. Some Switch Mode Power Supplies ( SMPS ) produce DC with a lot of ripple and/or high frequency electrical noise and are not suitable for any audio system.

Try it, if the audio is clear enough to be heard then use it

Thanks to both. That's a few pounds saved!

Out of interest, what difference would there be because of 1000mA versus 300 mA?

The 1000mA is the maximum current that it can supply. Your intercom only needs 300mA, so the power supply is being asked to provide much less than its maximum and will not be stressed.
