locking out as in the red light comes on you mean 
When was it last serviced
if it is red light coming on this is an ignition fault boiler failing to light is caused by either electrodes faulty gas valve or ignition pcb
any of which would need a corgi registered engineer to repair
Call Potterton on 08706 096096 as they now own the rights to this boiler and do all the servicing and repairs

Gaz while you are around does the lithium battery in the powermax clock serve any function in the operation or is it simply a back up for the programmer?...I have a blank clock at the moment I presume needs replacing, but thought I'd check.

yes needs replacing unfortunately quite a common fault with these try pressing all the buttons for a few seconds sometimes they re-set
