Practising Plastering

I want to have a go at plastering, as I am hoping to move house soon and will need skimming done I am sure.

I have had a go in the past but clearly need loads more practise!

I was thinking of erecting a plasterboard wall on studs in the garage just so I can practise on it. Is there a type of plaster that I could use, scrape off and re-use again? I know that lime mortar can be used for bricklaying practise - I was wondering if there was an equivalent in plastering?

Skimming with multi-finish is a good start. There's no substitute I'm aware of - the idea is to get used to mixing, handling, laying on and troweling the real stuff - so you're best with the real thing. Can always keep over-skimming.

Everyone is different - I did a short hands-on DIY course for a week in Stockport. Was a great start and hands on practice is essential. I had a house to do also.
Note - it was only a start! Only covered basics and won't make you a super-spread overnight!
The forum here then helped me gain know-how as I went along - posted quite a few pics.
Other non-professionals have maybe contacted a pro and done some labouring for them etc. Each to their own.

PS get a good trowel! Stainless steel, pre-worn and not too big (eg 11"x4")

lime mortar can also be used to practice rendering thats what they use at colleges it would get scraped off and remixed, they would do this so many times that the mortar would become become useless or hard to work, im not sure how many times it would get scraped off and remixed, as for the plaster im afraid your out of luck there

Try first with multi finish, you can pva over it and have another go once its dried out, also try some bonding over the plasterboard and use multifinish over it. Good luck, theres loads and loads of tips, methods and advice on here
