Prefil gaps before taping plasterboard

When applying paper tape to butt joints of plasterboard, do I need to prefill the joints or can I fill and tape as a single step?

Not done drywalling but artex which I imagine would be the same, spread filler along the joint to fill joint then roll out the tape bedding in with spatula as you go
