I'm sure this'll be an easy one. I need to drill thru an external wall in order to fit an outside tap. All theplumbing bits I'm quite happy about, even though I know I shall be swearing my head off when I actually attempt the job! The question I have though is what is the best way to prevent breakout on the external brickwork, when I drill through the wall, if I can manage this, then it will make fitting the wall plate so much easier. Thanks for any advice.

In most circumstances a reasonable suggestion :) , however, I need the hole to be very accurate on the inside, and also I dont want any breakout on the inner wall either. I guess I could wedge a brick or breeze block against the expected exit point on the outer wall, but I confess that this dosen't sound particularly good. Thanx for the response though.

Use a smaller drill bit to go through with first and slow it down and switch the hammer action off for the last inch ( mark your bit with a bit of tape to judge the depth ). Then you can go through with the bit size you want , once again slowly for the last inch and without the hammer. It has worked for me before but a lot may depend on the type of brick you are going through because some are more prone to breakout than others. Good luck with it.
On the other hand you could buy or maybe hire one of these

From advert
Accurate and successful way to pinpoint where exit holes will appear through walls, floors and ceilings prior to drilling. Accurate within 10mm on walls up to 250mm thick.

ACCURATE TO WITHIN 10mm  Might find it difficult to get the pipe through.

What i have done in the past is drill through with a small dia drill, then drill your larger hole from both sides. Works for me.

Thanks for the responses, I think I'll try the smaller drill bit for the last inch technique, I did think of this (honest), but wasn't sure if there was some old wily technique I didn't reckon on. Ta v much. :D

P.S a reply a 5:16 am ? couldn't sleep?
