Previous repairs around a swamp cooler

I have a house which I have owned for a little under a year. Water problems started developing around the swamp cooler in our tar and gravel roof late last winter. I just removed the swamp cooler and have discovery that there have been repairs made around the swamp cooler but that the cooler itself was never removed. This resulted in somewhat of a dam which allows water to stand on the roof. Money is tight right now and I'd like to know if there is anything that I can do to buy a little time before needing to replace the roof, say in a year or two.

Thanks for any input,
Tom

Sorry Tom, 99% of forum members are based in the UK. We don't have swamp coolers, I have no idea what a swamp cooler is, in fact I'm even thinking that this is some kind of wind-up!
