Problem with VW Passat pasenger door

I have a VW Passat 20v sports car and I am having a problem with the rear (driver side) passenger door which will not open.

Can anyone please help me. I have had a problem before and managed to open it but don't know how I did it. Can anyone come up with a idea as to how to fix this please. It is due for MOT in the next few days and I fear it will not pass if this door is not fixed in time.

Your help and advice would be so grately appreciated by a lady who does not have a lot of mechanical knowledge.

is the problem on the inside? You have tried the child lock haven't you . . .

It sounds like the door lock is faulty, They have a tendency of locking up, Banging the panel of the door just below the handle with your fist usually frees it off in order to get it open again (which is what you have done) but it will jam up again so replacing the lock will need to be done to fix it.
