Proline ceramic hob

Hi. I bought a proline ceramic hob for a building we're completely renovating. Man doing my electrics (not specialist electrician) installed 6mm cable because 6Kw rated hob. Hob installation instructions say 2.5mm cable is needed and in fact the 6mm cable doesn't fit to the connectors on the hob. Man doing my electrics spoke to proper electrician who said can only have one ring on at a time if 2.5mm cable. Comet (where I bought it) says follow instructions. No-one else has complained. Can anyone tell me who is right?

6kW hobs won't run on 2.5mm cable. Interesting though that you can't get 6mm cable into the terminals. Check the instructions again. Are you sure it says 2.5mm cable, or does it say 25A cable? Do the instructions or the panel on the hob specify the current?
 
The last metre or so would normally be terminated using some 2.5mm heat resistant flex such as this.

My induction hob (10.8kW) came with two 2.5mm cables attached to it which I terminated into a cooker outlet plate fed via a 6mm cable. The 2.5mm cables were factory fitted and impossible to remove without dismantling the unit.

Sparkyspike: The instructions say "... with a cable of the correct rating 2.5mm2 by a qualified electrician" Instructions specify rating as 6.0Kw. Panel on hob says 5.9Kw (which I think odd as 2 x 1.8 Kw rings and 2 x 1.2Kw rings come to 6.0 not 5.9) and 220-240 volts. By my calculations that means 25 Amps but it isn't stated on the panel.

Slup: Suggestion of the 2.5 mm butyl cable from tlc make the man doing my electrics cheer up a bit but he still felt that as it was only rated at 25 amp that didn't give enough leeway since that is what the hob draws. I see tlc do a similar heat resistant 4mm cable rated at 35 amp which he thought he might be able to get to fit the connectors on the hob.

Do you think that would be a viable (and safe) way forward?

You can take diversity into account though - your spark should be aware of this.

Your hob will only draw full power if all for rings are on at full power simultaneously. Even then, they will cycle on and off periodically under thermostatic control.

I'm sure the 2.5mm stuff will be fine.
 
Not sure what diversity means but expect it's somewhere on this site so will research further. I will see what man doing my electrics thinks next week. Thanks for your help.
 
diversity is what he said above..

not every ring will be on at the same time under normal operating circumstances.. the thermostats built into the hob will switch them on and off to maintain the temperature..

even if you switch all 4 on at once, and they are all on whilst heating to the same initial temperature, it will only be for a small period of time giving the cable time to "rest"..

normal 2.5mm flex is rated at 30A in "free air" which is what it would be classed as, dangling from cooker outlet to hob as it would likely be..
even if it's clipped to a surface, it's still 27A..
90C "rubber" cable is 36A "free air" or 33A clipped to a surface...

6Kw is 26A
