Whats used to prop joists if I take out a stud wall in a timber house ?

I assume an rsj would be too heavy for the timbers and if I have brick piers built either side, how would they attach to the stud walls that are either side...?

Any advice appreciated

If the steel is just to support a floor load, it dosn't necessariliy mean you can't support it within a stud wall. You may just need to add additional studs, suitably braced, under the steel.
Be careful that the wall you are removing is not a shear wall, providing lateral stiffness to the wall it joins

Timber framed houses have steel beams where necessary just the same as masonry houses do.

Steel beams sit happily on suitable timber posts
