Public grief.

public grief putting flowers on a roadside is mawkish if you have no connection with the deceased, bowing your head at WB is a mark of respect.
not sure about "mawkish". Why can the leaving of flowers on a roadside not be considered a mark of respect?
Its a mark of pollution if they can't be arsed to take the plastic off.

'mawkish' is a good word. Anyone for scrabble?

if you have no connection with the deceased why would you put flowers by the roadside, I find that a strange thing to do. especially crappy petrol station flowers

I was hitching about 5 years ago and walked past a pile of flowers on the roadside and on a fence.I read some of the dedications and it was quite apparent that some of the people who had left the flowers had no connection with the deceased. it could have been a dog that had been run over and people would still leave flowers.
