pump install query

Hello, I'm fitting a stuart turner 4.0 bar standard monsoon. When I have done this in the past I used an essex flange. looking at the instructions that came with the latest pump it seems I can just take the feed off the top of the vertical expansion pipe as per the middle image! Doesn't say i need a flange at all. wouldn't this setup be more liable to let air into the pump?

possibly but the manufacturer recommends it so its covered by the warrenty. Same set up as a surrey flange.
