I have an x-pole to put up, but I can't hear a difference in the ceiling to locate joists. Does anyone have any advice about finding them? Or whether my ceiling is likely to even have them? It's a flat, but it's rented so I can't really bust open the ceiling to have a look!

Thanks

It's always possible that your flat has a concrete ceiling. It's not unknown. Does it sound hollow when tapped?

You should be able to poke a narrow bladed screwdriver thru it to check timber location. Start at edge and measure 450mm to first they should then be spaced approx every 400mm. You should only need to prod a hole up to 50mmm either side of these dimensions to locate a timber, you can then easily fill any holes with a bit of filler.
Given the weight and leverage involved a pole held just by pressure is likely to fail.

If you can't find the joists by tapping , don't know the construction and can't or don't want to poke a series of holes in the ceiling cut a large circle of ply to rest against the ceiling. Joists are generally around 400 mm centres so a piece of ply around 1200 mm ( standard size of a sheet) across should span at least two joists and won't damage the rented ceiling.
