If its one of those fancy lights that attaches to a C shaped metal bracket by way of two small screws, then when terminating it before hanging I generally get a short bit of 1.5 6491x and tie it between a hole in the bracket and hole in the fitting. Connect the fitting and then untie the fitting and screw onto the base

Lighting designers would do well to have a go at putting up their own fittings once manufactured.
I can't see why they don't all have a bayonet type fitting where the screws go in first than the extremely fiddly "offer it up and put the screws in second".
My old manager uses soap. I used blu-tak.
They both work, but, bless him, my manager's solution works better, I think.
I fitted a couple of lights from ikea for a friend the other day, and tbf to them, although the lights weren't brilliant, (they were the type with the C shaped bracket, although the ceiling side was a circle with lots of fixing options) they came with a little S-hook that, once you had attached the bracket to the ceiling, hooked through the bracket and through the screw hole in the fitting to allow you to wire them up without holding the fitting
I threw them away, in hindsight, i should have kept them!

Sorry ressurrecting and old post, but today I followed the above nugget (and I guess in glorious full HD hindsight) obvious solution, worked at treat.. many thanks.
