question regarding hob fitting

Bought a belling hob and double oven ..I have cut the hole for the worktop question is it ok to seal the cut joint with ronseal clear varnish ,i have some left from fitting pine skirting so have give it about 4 coats.. if this is not satisfactory i do have some translucent silicon from wilko's would this be any good ??

Ronseal will do fine.

foil tape is more effective no chance of missing a bit and letting in water.

Silicone around the cut out and self adhesive foam strip under the hob to stop liquids getting to the cutout.
