Hi all,
ive got to lay some indian paving stone - a section 1 metre wide and just under 7 metres long.

I've sourced some from a guy locally who has got 7m squared left over from his job, so it will be perfect.

In terms of laying it, what mix would you use?

I am putting some hardcore down first. on top of this, do you just use sharp sand, or do you mix some mortar with it?

Also, i am laying right next to the brickwork of our new extension - do i leave a 10mm gap and fill with the sharp sand / mortar mix, or do i butt the paving slab directly next to the brickwork of the house without a gap?

Any other hints and tips ?

Cheers.

It would be easier if you made it 900mm wide to suit flags otherwise you would have a lot of cuts/wastage, lay using full bed of mortar 6 sharp sand 1 cement, leave 10mm gap and point otherwise weeds can get in if butted up, and gentle slope away from house, good luck.

Hi Jim,

thank you for your reply.

So 6 buckets sharp sand and 1 bucket mortar?
Do you add water to this mix, if so, how much?

Do you use the same mix for doing the joints?

Thanks again

Mark,
Agree with what Charlie said.
Note that this is a great site to read to get more information all in one place:

Regarding your comment the 'bedding mix' of ..."6 buckets sharp sand to 1 bucket mortar", you made a typo as that should be "6 buckets sharp sand to 1 bucket cement, ie a 6:1 mix ratio".
Paving expert actually suggests a weaker bedding mix of 10:1.
But note that bedding mix must be "Sharp Sand". Builders sand will wash away.

For the 'mortar mix' for the gap between the slabs, I am sorry to say that I cannot remember if I used Sharp or Builders sand, but I believe it should be a ratio of "3 buckets ?Builders? sand to 1 bucket cement, ie a 3:1 mix ratio".
