Quick Q, what does the 'T' stand for on my extractor fan?

Timer? Perhaps?
You will need a permanent live to the extractor if you want it to carry on running for a while after switching it off. (As well as a switched live, a neutral and an earth.)

i thought it may be that but wasnt sure.
the fan that i have removed has, live neutral and earth.
the new one has live neutral and timed :?:

If you haven't got both a permanent live and a switched live available at the fan you should be able to use it without the timer by connecting your existing switched live and neutral to L and N and adding a wire link between L and T.

I've never seen an extractor fan that has required an earth!!

I think that the wrong type of cable has been used to connect your old fan up... it should either be 4 core flex or 3c&e..

Never use the EARTH for anything other that EARTH
