i think for peace of mind then as they weigh so much,then do both,over engineer it,that way you know its solid.
 
deffo with gregers on that - I`d consider the iron going into a concrete pad too - so the bottom is anchored and the pull away from vertical is lessened :idea:
 
make sure they can not be lifted off or the ****** will have them for scrap

The repeated strain those swinging gates will impart upon the hinges will be massive.

Steel beam concreted into the ground about 800mm down with extended hooks welded to the beam then clad in brick me thinks.
 
Can it really be right that a 7' x 5' gate in wrought-iron can only weigh 35 kg ? That would make it tremendously flimsy, wouldn't it ?
