hi guys new here, i want to make a frame that houses the tv and a mounted electric fire which is secured to the wall floor and ceiling. Every video i have seen the ceiling isnt there. Can i attach the stud to the ceiling onto joists or best just to cut it out and attach to joists?

Just attach the head plate over the PB ceiling. Locate & screw through into the joists if they run the right way for you; if not, use plasterboard fixings. You’re fixing the vertical studs to the wall so it ain’t going anywhere anyway & the loading will be negligible.

Don’t know heat output of the fire but avoid unprotected combustible material (wood) around the fire. Make sure you allow ventilation for heat to escape, particularly for the TV (flat panel & not a CRT I hope) or you’ll fry it.

cheers richard. was going to put air intake and outlet at top and bottom to allow for heat. the fire cant go flush inside as heat come out the top so it just hangs on the wall basically, the tv will be flush so the angled heat of the fire comes away from the tv anyway if that makes sense.
my other worry is that the walls in our house are rubbish would i just use a plasterboard wall plug and attach the wood to that. or aim for a wooden stud and just screw into that.

If the existing walls are plasterboard stud, locate the internal studs & fix the new ones directly over & into those; using nothing but plasterboard fixings for the whole lot may be a bit too optimistic.
