Gallows corner? Isn't there a roundabout in London called "Gallows Corner" where there's a large roundabout as you come from the A 12 side of London into "general london"

Clue. Prisoners were taken from Newgate prison, along Oxford St & allowed to stop at every pub on the way!!

Would this be actually on their way to their execution as a bit of a "last treat" so to speak - Edit: It brings a grim and grizzly meaning to the term "last orders"
 
Trouble is most of the hangmen were complete drunks as well & frequently messed up
 
They had to gauge the length of the rope. To short, they could live for hours. To long & the head could come off

It was a grisly fate without having to endure things like that - similar to using a blunt axe for beheadings

The axemen were worse. As you can imagine. Frequently hitting shoulders etc
 
They must have been aware of the things that could go wrong which must have added to the terror

thst happened to Thomas Cromwell his enemies plied the axe man with booze the night before the execution bloke could hardly stand up right

all to cause Cromwell to suffer
 
Worst of all was William Wallis. (Braveheart) Makes your eyes water, trust me.
