Thought about this as i cleared a path to the old apple tree at the top of the garden this morning.
Stumped.
Clue please?

It's not an apple many will have heard of, perhaps.
There's this seed, which everyone will call a nut.
You will know the nut very well, and almost certainly have eaten many.
But they aren't nuts at all, they're seeds.
They grow as a drupe,
Everyone calls these notnuts, nuts.

Dork will just say no, it's a nut, because it takes more than a pair of neurons to accept.

So you're going to have to google a few "nuts" you know well, and find an article which goes further than wailing that they aren't nuts, and mentions the apple.

I knew already, so I didn't have to look it up, which is just as well.

You do aleady know that it's a notnut that you'll never see in a shell, cos I told you that in the question. The shells contain a poison. That tells you it's not a peanut, which is also a notnut, it's a legume.

* notnut is not a botanical term....

So it's not an apple, it's a seed, but can also be called a nut, or a notnut.

Is it ...

There's a seed which everyone calls a nut, and there's a thing called an apple.
With the poisonousness of that seed case, you'll know when you found it.

Surprising....... one apple, one nut. Thats why they're expensive!
