As stated in another post I may be doing my 1st rewire soon.
Tonight I spoke to my mate who needs the rewire and asked about the quotes he had got.
He has only got one so far and it goes like this - yeh mate I can do that for you, new wiring and sockets and stuff, £2700, how's that for you ?

I was amazed that in this economic climate a respected local firm would be so blasse about a job.

When I quizzed said mate for more details he said the guy went on about Part P and certificates but he didn't really understand what he was going on about so didn't pay attention.

Am I right in thinking a quote should be on paper and detail everything about the job that will be done ?

The guy didn't even talk about smoke detectors, surge protectors, outside sockets or any of the more modern aspects of an up to date wiring system. :x

That's why you need a written quote & make sure he's kosher wrt Part P otherwise it will come back to bite you..

"surge protectors"? since when do we install those in a rewire? they're normally included in the extension leads..

Sounds a bit dodgy to me. Whenever i quote for a rewire i go through exactly what the customer wants, price it and then provide a full written spec more for my protection then anything else. Atleast if the customer asks for an extra socket here or there there can be no argument as to whether or not it has been allowed for. Personally for your average 3 bed house with everything chopped in and made good i would be looking for close to 4G for a decent level of install so £2700 sounds cheap IMO.

I'd make a note of it as going round and asking what they want, then get them to check it and sign it before I left.. that way the quote is based on exactly what they told you..
