quoting jobs

Hi all,

when quoting for a large job, let say commercial for the sake of the question. What sort of information is required and what sort of questions are asked in order to move forward with the customer/contractor relationship smoothly and save any mis-communication?

is there a different set of rules and regulations for DIY in relation to electrics than them to be adhered to by a qualified electrician?

Just got the impression that some on this forum would carry out quoting jobs on a daily basis and would be able to give vital information.

"Some" on this forum like me are pro sparks, and we do quote jobs every day, but this is a DIY forum, ie NOT aimed at professionals.

Same here SS and I certainly dont give out my charges on a public forum. Heavens, people would start trying to negotiate and then where would we be?

Hi RMS,

i feel that when quoting for jobs its a good idea to make sure you state the start date and completion date of the jobs as this can safe allot of hassle in the future sometimes even legal disputes.

Another good idea is to check that you have the man power and availability of men depending on the size of job and start date.

Thats just a couple of points that should be taken into account when quoting for jobs. I'm sure there are many more?

Its quite a broad question. Are you talking about purely the relationship with the customer, or questions related to the job?

here are some more i can think of

what exactly do they wan't
what is the existing installation like
what standards are you expected to work to (presumablly they will wan't BS7671 compliance in most cases but they may well have thier own requirements on top like "all wiring must be hidden" or "runs through walls must be in conduit" or whatever)
how hard will it be to get cables where you need them in a way that satisfies both BS7671 and the customer
are there any restrictions on when you can do certain or all work
will you have to clean up between work sessions.
will you have to do any of the work live
what is the deadline
how and when will you be payed

i'm not a sparky myself and i'm sure i'll have missed some.
