Rachel Reeves budget

Quoted as £22 billion in July 2024, but by raising taxes and reducing living standards, labour have managed to get it to £39 billion, great effort chaps. Oh, hang on, wasn't the idea to get the figure DOWN?
They just don’t get, that the bigger the state, the more taxes needed, the less competitive the U.K. becomes.

It’s difficult to work out what is actually coming, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see the return of the 50% tax bracket along with 2% on the basic rate.

you just dont get it

the more privatisation the more private equity squeezes profit out for its shareholders whilst giving poorer service

private the profits
socialise the losses

I’m just glad we sold our business premises in the last tax year rather than this one.

Its complete nonsense.

Private companies compete and have scale, they have to innovate or die.

Some things are better being public, but any time a company has the ability to scale and innovate, it will typically be able to do it better, for less money and still make a profit.

How about this one, I saw an advert fro a gold selling company and I already knew but it reminded me that there is no CGT when you sell your gold - so do we think that is something Rach could target - at least for personal oners. ?

I thought that was only for gold sovereigns and Britannia's?

Oh dunno then - cause they are a recognised currency I suppose - are they?
I thought it was all gold like those little bars,

Yeah, you said. You even started a thread on it. They are not in power. There’s a world of difference when a party in power makes a solemn pledge.

UK gold currency coins are free of VAT when you buy them, and Capital Gains tax when you sell them. That's the simplest rule to remember.

Britannias usually have a slightly smaller dealer's margin than Sovereigns. But the price of a Britannia is getting quite big now, so if you only want to buy or sell in small amounts, sovereigns might suit you better.

You currently have an annual £3000 tax-free allowance for capital gains. If you'd bought three Krugerands 12 months ago, and sold them today, you'd be just under that. Britannias would be CGT free. But the price can also go down, and can stay flat literally for decades. It varies with sentiment. Incidentally, the Dividend allowance is currently £500, and the Interest allowance is often £1,000 but varies with complex rules. A few people don't know the difference between interest and dividends. Anybody who is a serious investor or saver ought to know. Personally, I don't see why any of them should be taxed differently, or have extra allowances, from income tax

Silver is subject to VAT when you buy it, so you've lost 20% immediately.

Gold bars are subject to capital gains tax.

So no good reason for a private UK investor to buy either.

Edit
Here you are

What’s your point? Two wrongs don’t make a right or were you never taught that?

I think she's already a dead (wo)man walking tbh.
I realise people cant help how they are but I have always found beyond irritating, a terrible choice for the 2nd most important job in govt.

I know he is too young but Torsten Bell would be a far better chancellor -he is a much better communicator, great in interviews, sounds and is sincere and he actually .

Starmer is a "steady as she goes" sort of chap, not much creativity.........Labour should ditch all the norms and go for it.

so you admit that 14 years of Tory govt was wrong
In my eyes, towards the end of their time in government, yes. Obviously I confirmed that when I voted for reform in the last election, you plum.

What’s your point?
