Rad as well as underflorr heating?

Hi

I'm doing a kitchen/diner extension and installing HW UFH, the rest of the home is rads. The room will be 45m2. People have mentioned that the downside is that our (UK - N Ireland) climate is so unpredictable that it's hard to control - it's OK all the time it's cold, then you get a sudden hot day and it's hard to cool down, then it's cold again so takes a day to heat back up, so on and so forth. So for days when I'm caught out by sudden cold weather I thought that if I had a rad as well (I know this defeats the object of the clean look) then I could use it as a boost until the UFH takes over.

Is this a silly idea or one which people actually do do?

Looking another way, you could argue why put underfloor heating in if you are going to fit a radiator?

If you want a fast response you could fit a thin screed system such as Velta Minitec.

No to rads only cos it's a cold room, needs even heating... and I've already bought it I thought there had to be a minimum depth of screed tho? Thinking of having stone carpets too...?

If you want a clean look, put in a plinth heater that runs off the CH. They also have a fan, so great for boosting the heat quickly.

Re: plinth heaters - can these be turned off if using the UFH though? Do they have their own valve which is accessible from the front?

Yes. Because you are heating a smaller thermal mass. However Minitec is expensive and designed for refurbishment situations where there is floor slab insulation in place eg: post 1970s house but the customer does not want to raise the floor height significantly.

Regarding the plinth heaters - we use www.smiths-env.com units - they have an on/off switch for the fan on the facia.
