On a ring main protected bya 30a fuse,would it be possible to run a radial circuit direct from the consumer unit off the same fuse supplying 3 double sockets?would it overload the fuse ?

you could, BUT if would have to feed a fused spur which would then feed the sockets
 
I'm not with you on that,2.5 cable direct from c u to first socket then to next and then terminating at the 3rd. fused spur ?

2.5 is rated 27A. ring main is protected by a 32A MCB. guess why you need a FCU.

Ring main is on a 30a cartridge fuse,cable is going to be run in loft of garage then down inside partition of walls to sockets.Are you saying put a fcu with neon locater in wall for the cable then to sockets?
 
cable goes

fuse >> FCU >> sockets

thus protecting the cable with a 13A fuse. Since the max. spur allowable on a ring main is 13A. All the sockets in the garage are limited to 13A.

Not the best way of doing it - consider running a new circuit. Although with cartridge fuses, consider a new consumer unit too.
 
I don't suppose you already have an RCD on the socket circuit?

If you are going to need a 13A FCU on the feed to the sockets, you might consider an RCD FCU - more expensive but no bigger, and if you are likely to be plugging in your mower, hedge clipper, tools for car in the garage, then you need an RCD, and the combined thing is a neat way to do it. You can treat it as the "main switch" for your garage. Argos have an MK unit at £25 as part of a kit, which is a very fair retail price.
 
No you can't add a radial circuit to the terminals of a ring. Why not put the extra sockets on the ring? Remove one existing leg from CU and join to new piece of 2.5 going to first new outlet. Loop the 2.5 round the new sockets and the last leg goes back to the board connecting to the CU.

But you do need RCD protection, and don't forget (if applicable, a "two colours" warning sticker.
 
Why not run a 6mm radial circuit to cover it. Not a good idea to tap into ring but cant see technically why not.
