Does a radial circuit have to be one straingt line or can it be split? Ie. cable comes from consumer unit in to a junction box then two cables feed different sockets in the room.

Providing the junction box is of the correct current rating, and accesible then there is no reason why this method cannot be employed, but it is preferable to not use junction boxes if possible.

I saw in a Circuit Design book that you weren't allowed to spur off a radial in a kitchen, but no reg. ref. Does anyone know the background?

There is absolutely nothing to prevent you for using a 'star' configuration on a radial circuit.

It wasn't talking about the dedicated cooker circuit, was it?

No, that wouldn't have caught my eye.

Or even a "constellation" configuration, with stars branching off other stars etc
