Heres what I believe to be a simple question.

How close can 1.5 & 2.5 T&E be to radiator copper pipes under floorboards. Can they rest on top of the pipes, or must not touch full stop.

Personally mine dont touch, but this is a result of a discussion!

They musn't touch. The insulation on T&E is rated to about 70 degrees, but heating pipes can go upto 80. It won't melt straight away if the pipes aren't that hot, but it will degrade the insulation over time.

Cables should not be in contact with or run alongside pipes, (From on site guide). No distance is stated but far enough away for the cable not to be heated by the pipe i would say. A cable has to be derated if it passes through thermal insulation so warming it up with central heatin pipes is a definate no no.

Would you try to see how close you could hold a match to a petrol tank before it exploded?. I dont think there are any definitve rules to this, but would you do it?. Why would someone want to rest cables on hot pipework?

Not neccesarily resting on cables, but touching them. I have seen installations, where cables are just run (lifting very few floorboards). I guess years of cable management came in as handy knowledge for me.

On a side note. If the pipes were wrapped in foam insulation. Then would this still be an issue?

Going off topic, but you could put the flaming match in petrol and it won't explode! :P In fact the match will go out.

they should be kept seperate

Hmm thats what I told the CORGI reg plumber who laid primaries ontop of my ring main cables in loft. He reckond the insulation on pipes would protect cables.. I would never do that! there again Im now an incompetent person according to odpm. But there again I never burnt a house down yet!! He moved cables in the end.

Sorry, what are primaries. Although I believe in keeping them separate, would the foam insulation not have kept the ring cables safe?

How did you manage to get the plumber to move the cable?

Quite true if there are no fumes. But would you risk it? If so, can you give us a practical demonstration and place a video of it on here for us to watch. I very much doubt if you will take me up on this.

Primaries are the main flow return pipes to boiler. The cables were fixed along a joist , plumber laid his pipes ontop all way along 2mt and actually resting on cable. if he could have used the thick insulation ok but could only get the small wall foam round pipe. Was pre part p so found he moved cables when I got home.
