Radiators not as hot after the annual service check

Hello,
I had my annual plumbing / boiler inspection by the gas board last week and in the last few days i have noticed that the radiators do not seem to be getting as hot as they used to and possibly the hot water also is not as hot as before the gas man come.
I mean i normally have the thermostat say 22 degrees and it is a nice warm temperature.
But now i am having to turn the thermostart up to around 25 say to get the same amont of warmth in the room etc.

I have a baxi boiler which is behind my fire and i did notice the gas man playing around underneath it for a while whilst dusting etc.
I have pulled off the front of the fire and there is a knob with low 1,2,3,4 & high on it and there is an arrow lined up with the 1
Am i correct in thinking that this is some kind of temperature control for the boiler ???? if so can i just turn the knob around to the 2 and see what the temperature then feels like or is it not as simple as that,i mean do i need to get him back to switch off the pilot light etc first.Just dont want to turn the knob around until i ask someone first.Thanks very much.
The boiler behind the fire may be a 401 or 422 but cant be 100% but does ring a bell.

This time of year I would recommend setting this knob (the boiler thermostat) to 3 or 4.

You can turn it up yourself but I suggest you only move it 1/2 a graduation at a time as the lower you have it the more you may save some gas.

Turning the room stat up should not make any difference unless the room stat is too close to a radiator.

So there is no issue with me just turning it around myself.

Why would the gas man turn it down to 1 at this time of year ?

In spite of what Dave has said, I find that these usually are far hot enough at about 2-3.

He probably had it rather low for testing and forgot to turn it up a bit.

Just possibly he knows these can overheat if turned too high and was not taking any chances as its easy for you to turn it up yourself.

This sentence bothers me, i go to so many back boilers and the customer comments that the fire hasnt been removed in years durings the service

Whilst he was dusting around and fiddling about i am sure has turned the knob down as i have now turned it up to 3 and i can feel the difference in the radiator heat and from the tap.

He did say i reccommend you to have a new boiler as this must be 20 years old.
I think baxi boilers last for ages and he turned it down thinking i was just going to buy a new one just like that,i wondered why as i insure the system with british gas and if it goes wrong they can fix it

Id imagine it was an oversight by the guy when working. Ive been to them where service engineers have left them off on the stat by accident.

Did he remove the gas fire when "dusting"?

fiddling around while dusting, just about sums them up, this is an open flued double appliance, which requires the fire to be completely removed for access to service the boiler, then fire refit and strippeed and serviced as well, 1-1/4hrs absolute minimum for someone who has done hundreds of them and can do it with their eyes shut, did he check flue and go outside, how long was he there?

he was here about 45 minutes,yes he did go outside.I work in the car industry and to me its like taking your car to the garage and when you collect it after the service the mechanic ha tuned in all the radio stations to a different number button to what you have it set on,its sorted now but stil dont like the method of work thanks for the help

I often get the same comment but then I look back on the history to discover I have serviced it for the last few years and I have never done a service without a full complete strip down.

no tony you have often said that it is 2 hours that is required. both myself and namsag have berated you several times about this.

if you insist on putting the boot into BG (again) then at least get your facts right.

the only exception to this would be the inset versions which i can do in 45 minutes, i'd imagine most folk could do it in a similar time.

Agile you also used to say it took 2 hours to do a divertor on a turbomax. Which most people can do in 40 minutes or under.
So i would not consider it a boast that a job takes you so long it is more a sign of being slightly incompotent
