Radon protection.

If adjoined to the house then yes. Basic protection is only a 1200 gauge dpm lapped and sealed into the wall dpc's with some extra care taken at overlaps and penetrations etc though so hardly needs a second mortgage. Even if a sump and some pipes are required its only a few quid.

Thanks for replies.

According to the local Building Control, protection has been provided at the build stage to the bungalow in 1999, therefore have no concerns there.

On reflection think one idea is to have an insulated shed, standing off the ground on bricks [free flowing air underneath].

Garage can then be used just for the usual storage plus car.

The British Geolocical Survey has statutory responsibility for radon mapping and protection measures in the UK. Their report will tell you if you are in a radon affected area and will provide you with a certificate that determines required measures for building control. The certificate costs £3.50. If building control insists on more protection then the certificate requires ask them where you apply for reimbursement of the additional unnecessary costs.

Advice I have received by someone who knows about these thing is as follows;

If you are both non-smokers the risks of radon affecting you (killing you) before you die of something else are probably very small indeed. Maybe 1%

If the house you buy is one of the few that are quite badly effected (and if you bother to have it tested to find out this information) then you have two choices - ignore the readings and get on with living, or treat the problem (which may or may not be effective) and then live your lives as before but with a slightly increased risk of dying of something else rather than radon (lung cancer). Your actual risk of dying of something is 100%, unfortunately.

Radon exposure later in life is not too much of an issue because the cancers it causes tend to occur 20 to 30 years after exposure. In general, cancers can be far more aggressive in younger people (breast cancer is one example).
