Being a complete novice on this please could someone help me clarify if this is an issue or not. The noise being made by the water heater is driving me insane! The timer is on for twice a day for 2 hours a piece (6.30-8.30am and 4-6pm)) which is sufficient for the hot water we need but for some reason, when the timer is off, the noise coming from the water heater (a strong humming noise - similar to a plane taking off in the far distance) is continuous (been going at least for 48 hours). We have been living here for a few weeks (house is only 3 years old) and not sure whether to call someone in or if this is 'normal'. No issues with hot water or heating at all, just the noise which is so frustrating when trying to sleep!

Please help

Thanks

An immersion heater that is switched off cannot be a source for your noise! It's just sat there doing nothing.

Perhaps if it's not switched off properly then the timer could be suspect but I suspect the source of resonance could be elsewhere. Do you have any dripping taps?

Try turning the water off at the valve nearby. In cases like this I use a long screwdriver as a listening stick on the metal pipework to help determine the cause.

An underground burst pipe could even be the cause here.

Thanks - think its the pump making the noise and problems with the thermostat (which appears to be a bit loose on the actual tank). There are no drips or leaks or anything....
