Ratty old light...

Do you get condensation on the flex?

What about inside a shaver light/socket or a shower? Does it happen?

Remember you cannot fit a pendant in a bathroom.

Yes you can.

What am I thinking of then?

Skirted shroud only in a bathroom?

I vaguely recall something about that, but I've never seen it in the regs.

Depending on the ceiling height a pendant may not be suitable as it will be at least 6" lower and may end up being in a restricted zone.

HO skirt on bathroom fittings was in the 15th (1981-1991).

471-38

In a room containing a fixed bath or shower cubicle, parts of a lampholder within a distance of 2.5m from the bath or shower cubicle shall be constructed of or shrouded in insulating material. Bayonet type (B22) lampholders shall be fitted with a protective shield complying with BS5042. As an alternative, totally enclosed luminaires may be used.

2.5m being of course, the old "arm's reach" measurement.

BS 5042 is the standard relating to lampholders.

In practice, most bathrooms had a batten lampholder, which has an HO skirt.

The reg. from the 14th Ed. reads as follows:

D16. In a room containing a fixed bath or shower, parts of a lampholder likely to be touched by a person replacing a lamp shall be constructed of, or shrouded in, insulating material and, for bayonet-type (B22) lampholders, be fitted with a protective shield complying with BS52.

Note - The use of totally-enclosed lighting fittings is desirable in such circumstances.

Amusingly, the regs don't seem bothered about the fitting being touched by someone in the bath (who is most likely to be naked and wet), rather by someone changing a lamp (who is most likely to be clothed and dry).
