RCD faulty?

the rcd wont reset with the mcbs on or off including the main switch.... i only changed a few socket fronts which ive checked and cant see any visible problems. there is someone going to the house tomorrow to test the circiuts. why wouldnt the rcd reset without any load on it???

DID YOU TURN IT RIGHT OFF AND THEN ON?

you seemed to skim that advice. SERIOUSLY. You may think it dumb, BUT, did you push it fully DOWN before turning it back on?

YES I DID PUSH IT RIGHT DOWN BEFORE PUSHING IT BACK UP.

Should have clarified earlier

I have lost count of the number of installs I have gone to, even after stressing this point, to find the RCD tripped to the central position.

Friday night I was called to a frozen food depot who had lost all 60 lights inside the freezer (400w sons). They couldn't load the lorrys for the saturday deliverys.

I knew the site, and new it had a DB full of circuits fed via contactor and a single switch with a neon indicator. I assumed after the phone call (and asking them to check breakers etc) that the contactor had frazzled.

Turned up, and the first thing I did was wonder over to the switch for the lights to check the neon was lit (control fuse healthy). Had to move a pallet of milk crates to get to it, and as I moved them, the lights came on. The crates where resting on the switch. The switch is actually in a position out of the way, and there is crash barriers around the room......which where missing as they where being replaced.

Sometimes even the simplest thing goes un-noticed, even when you have asked, questioned and interogated.

IMHO a Faulty RCD is not usually (If ever) oversensitive but rather Non or poor functioning.
Look for a wiring fault in the first (and second ) instance..
Hope that helps
