can you settle an argument? kitchen and conservatory being rewired.oldish consumer unit with mcbs but no rcd main switch, as the consumerm is not going to be replaced can the new ring be put back into the mcb or would a seperate rcd have to be fitted due to the sockets being accessable from outdoors

The Regs only reccomend an RCD fitted if accesable outside the equipotential zone.

But my advise is that for the cost of the unit its worth it for the safety it provides
 
yes. RCD fitted. See if you can get an RCBO for your consumer unit, this is an MCB and RCD in one. :idea: but as you said "oldish" i doubt this somehow.

Cable needs to go from <32A MCB in CU> in 6mm² to an <RCD rated at 30mA trip, 40A rated>, then run the ring in 2.5mm² from this.

Yes, and two or more RCD-Sockets are a more expensive way than putting an RCD on the new circuit.
