You'll probably find that someone has banged a nail thru one of your cables and you've got a Neutral - earth short. Insulation test will show which circuit its on. If you havent painted over the skirting yet, have a look for any nails that are under/near a socket (or other electrical fitting).
Wires should (should) run vertically or horizontally from each socket but you can never guarantee it.
