My daughter recently moved house. She has been plugging her toaster into a RCD socket next to her hob - it worked well for a few weeks. Now the RCD socket is clicking continuously and won't stop. She has unplugged the toaster so nothing is plugged into it. If she plugs something in to it, it won't work and the clicking continues. She tried turniing the power off and on but it made no difference. The noise is driving her batty, it's a bit like an alarm going off - what could be the problem?

It could well be that the RCD protection is starting to fail/faulty outlet.
But first quick check inside for loose or damaged connection or insulation (after isolating the circuit that is) if no evidence or if terminals are tightened, and continues, replace the outlet.

What make is it?
Have heard clicking coming from Powerbreaker RCD sockets when the test button is pressed (doesn't stop even though the socket has tripped), could it be the test button has stuck in?

might be worth turing off the supply to the socket for a few minutes, you may be lucky and the electronics reset internally and it cures itself
