Hi Folks,

I am planning to stripping back the old finish and applying a new finish so it re-water proofs the window sill.

Can someone tell me what type of varnish or finish is used in the attached photos's?

I think it is probably polyethylene varnish as it looks quite thick but wanted to double check.

Impossible to tell from a photo, but why does it matter if you are removing it?

Hi foxhole,

Thanks for the quick reply.

I don't know much about finishes so I thought I would try and replace like for like if possible.

Any advise on what to use that is water resistant, UV resistant and durable?

There seems to be alot of choices on the market between wax, oil, varnish or a product that is a combination of them.

Thanks

Ed

You've got either a penetrating or condensation damp problem there that no surface finish is going to prevent. And it looks like the timber is starting to rot too.

Have the metal frames Thermal Breaks in them?

I agree with Woody's comments.

You need to investigate why the timber is so wet and how badly damaged.
