I am replacing some floor tiles in the conservatory.

Do I need to remove all of what is left of the old adhesive or can I tile on top of the thin layer that is left?

Original tiles were laid 10 years ago.

Why not post a pic?

Typically, you would have to remove all adhesive down to the background.

Remove it with a sharp scraper or chisel.

Or, bed one tile with your new adhesive and see if it stays in level plane with the surrounding tiles?

But, FWIW, we always remove all previous adhesive - no call backs.

OK thanks. Whats left is quite stubborn to shift, but I agree. Do it properly, do it once. About 15 tiles to replace.

Tried a heat gun. Full on for 20 minutes - wouldn't touch it. Its tile adhesive - set like stone.
