About to retile my path outside which is only about 3-4 feet long. It currently has white & black victorian tiles....many are damaged and a chunk of marble where the tiles run out. I need some advice on what to do, what type of bed to set them in, what type of tiles, tile bed & grout should I be looking for as I am basically going to use similar tiles but smarten it up. Any advice would be really appreciated...want to do the job tomorrow.

sorry this might be too late but the tiles you want are called encaustic tiles and whats special about them is they are coloured all the way through so when layed on a floor they will not wear through to a white centre(unless they are white of course)like other tiles.
You will probably need to get them from a reclaimation yard to get them at a sensible price.
They were originally laid on a mortar bed but floor tile adhesive is perfectly suitable.

Have already found the tiles, one company makes very good replicas.....way too expensive though so have found some good copies...they just dont do many sizes or shapes...but as we are selling the house dont want to be spending up to £300 on 1.75metres. Tiles I found £100 inc grout & adhesive. I was told as my origninal path is still solid to tile straight over the old ones, scoring them first with my angle grinder. Thesers no point saving my original tiles for anything as many are chipped, and one part of the path consists of a slab of marble.

doing a similar type project - where did you get the cheap tiles? How did you get on?

I got them from Tile Superstore in Garrett Lane Wandsworth, £38 per Square metre. The only limit with them is that you cant buy different shapes for patterning or borders. I bought 4" black & white and laid in a diamond pattern, using half (diagonal) tiles in black to edge. Looks very smart....even the postman wanted me to do his...make-up artist to tiler in two easy steps LOL
