Looking to move my shower waste pipe from running along the back of the bath to along the front -so (coupled with a removal bath panel!) next time an elbow starts leaking I can access it easily....

Should be quite straightforward except for a blanked off pipe approx 18 inch long running out of the side of the bath trap...which kind of gets in the way of the new run....

Suspect this must be the old trap and originally this pipe ran to a washbasin drain....(before previous owner (Mr. Bodge-it) extended the bathroom)

Is this likely to be the case? Could it be there for any other reason?
Any problem with shortening it or will I need to replace the trap?

Can't see the point of it. As you say it was probably for a basin, therefore no reason why you cannot cut it back and recap.
