You could use these fire hoods;

Nail full-height noggins between the joists to keep the insulation at bay. In the absence of any manufacturer instructions, I'd space them so that the cleared area was square, although the guidelines here:

http://www.iee.org/Publish/WireRegs...nstalling_recessed_luminaires_in_ceilings.pdf

suggest a clearance of only 100mm around. They also suggest 75mm above, again in the absence of any manufacturer instruction. This is relevant, as I would advise boxing in over the top as well, and then draping fibreglass or rockwool over it, to keep the overall insulation intact. Depending on the depth of the joists you might just be able to board across the top. If you don't box them in then you will lose heat, possibly get cold draughts falling down through the luminaires, and over time risk dark patches on the ceiling as the constantly rising warm air through just a few places deposits concentrations of dust.

And talking of dust - wear a mask when moving the loft insulation about. Some US vermiculite used to contain asbestos. There is no evidence that any UK products ever did, but I'm pretty sure that our country does not have any vermiculite mines so whatever was sold here was imported from somewhere.

Given how nasty asbestos is, I'd rather be safe than sorry.

See these:

particularly the scary video in the second one.
