Whether my new boiler gets fixed or not, I'll be in the market for a new boiler in the next few months...

Any advice on what to go for?

I have a small-mid sized 3 bed semi, built 1923 with 7 rads and I want/need a combi.

Fire off your suggestions with reasons... I'm hopefully going to flog this place within the next 18 months to upgrade, so I don't really want to spend a fortune for someone else to get the benefit! Although I suppose a new quality boiler could be a selling point!

It will only be a selling point if its correctly fitted by a CORGI installer who has dealt properly with the notification procedure and Benchmark Certificate.

Budget for about £1500 for a new combi.

It will be my friend's brother that fits it.

He's got all sorts of Corgi registered qualifications, as well as being a fully qualified electrician, so there's no worries there in the slightest. i trust him implicitly and he won't charge the earth. He can legitimately supply any certificate the boiler would need - he works for my friend who owns a company that does gas and electical work on all the schools in my area.

He will fit any boiler I choose but specialises in Worcester Bosch... I haven't spoken to him about this yet as he's already told me he wont touch a Ferroli (months ago) and he's currently away.

I a trying to jump the gun on this one... does anyone have names of boilers that would be suitable? (From memory he recommended a 28 kW one last time asked him what to look for).

I hope you realise that he cannot legitimately fit a boiler except when he is working for his employer!

If he is working on the side he is NOT registered with CORGI and he is not insured.

If you search this forum you will find two recent examples of situations where a householder has used someone working on the side and got into difficulties.

I wonder why any competent boiler engineer would not touch a Ferolli for a friend???

For a REALLY good friend I would even fix a Sonya-Duval !

If he wasn't a friend I would budget about £1800 + VAT but as friend he may do it cheaper.

Thanks for the concern guys, but the boiler will be fitted in accordance with all regulations etc and will go through the books of my friend's company and the work will be fully covered by an extremely professional company (very highly regarded in the North West), as I've already stated.

It is my friend's brother, not my close personal friend, who is the CORGI installer. My friend owns the company that his brother works for, which is why I will get a discount.

Now, on with the topic... can anyone recommend a good value combi boiler (approx 28 kW)?

Could probably do with it fitting inside a kitchen cupboard, too...

Normally I would only ever recommend a Vaillant, in your case the Ecotec Plus 831, but these will not fit inside a kitchen cupboard, but line up with them depth and height wise.

If you want a combi to fit in the cupboard, although I have not fitted one yet, I think the Broag Remeha combi at 28Kw is definitley worth a look. It is the smallest combi out there and comes from a company with excellent reputation in europe for reliability. They also do a 35Kw in the same physical size.

Almost any boiler will give good service if its correctly installed on a clean system!

The Ideal Response was a very small boiler and gives us problems to find a replacement when its been fitted in a cupboard.

Does anyone know which boiler will match the same sizes?

Does an Isar match the external dimensions and pipe connections ? Not that anyone would usually want to fit one though.

Tony

The Isar will fit in a kitchen cupboard as long as you don't use the stand off kit  It is different sizes to the awful response though and your correct Tony, who would want to fit such rubbish now we now know how bad it is  , oh I know that housing association in this months GI  Bet Ideal done a deal, buy one get 4 free and their own personal Ideal service engineer

Would want the new boiler to fit in a cupboard, but should mention that the size of cupboard is flexible...

The intended site for said boiler is in a corner of the kitchen, where I can use a custom fitted cupboard, so size probably isn't as much of a factor is it would for some people.

Then I would go for the Vaillant, but the Broag will be around £200 cheaper:cool:
