Rectangular newel post on landing, replace...no room

Hello!

I have a rectangle newel post on my landing and I wish to replace the post and landing hand rail with spindles.

If I replace the rectangular post even with a square one, I don't think there will be enough room for the offset handrail to return at 90 degree into the newel post?

Please see attached pics. I'm trying to think of the best way to go about it.

If I do replace the post, can I cut off at the base and dowel it?
