I've just found a load of red cable - it seems to run from the flat below into the loft above my flat, but I can't access the loft to find out where it goes. It's circular, fairly newish looking and larger than standard two core and earth cable.

Any ideas folks?

I live in a converted flat at the top of an old Victorian building which was rewired a few years ago, but standard flat white pvc cable was used for that. This red stuff doesn't originate from my consumer unit either.

Very confused!

Is there a 'landlord's board' for supplying such things as fire alarms and communal hallway lighting?

This would explain why you have no red cable in your fuse box.

Is it flat? It could be 1.5mm 3c+e LS&F cables as used for the interconnections between mains smoke detectors/heat detectors.

Ah - fire alarm cable would make sense as ehre's an integrated fire alaarm system. Surprising there's so much going into my flat, but hey ho

Thanks a lot for your help folks!
