i can't understand why people nowdays are so interested in getting involved in everyone elses problems.

i go to peoples houses to do the job i came for i'm not bothered if

Some very interesting replies there... my main curiosity was really about the legality - I have never been one to blindly follow rules and I had already decided to do exactly what holmslaw and bongos said, strictly legal or not. I don't think I could sleep well knowing that the appliance side CPC was floating about loose in the wall box. But it's good to know that it sounds it was legally the correct thing to do - so thanks electronicsuk for the clear clarification.
I'll have another go at my friends to try and persuade them to get the other problems professionally and competently sorted.
PS for Seco: these are my friends... call me a nosey **** but I probably would tell them about a bald tyre, then it's up to them.
