I do not understand all this 'guilt' business. I've not had a mortgage since I turned 42 and I've never felt any guilt by paying my mortgage off. Since then, I've bought and sold by cash and again, never felt any guilt.

What I meant was, don't spend all of your income on rent. Rent by all means, but also save hard towards a mortgage with a decent deposit. Far too many pi$$ it up against a wall and then wonder why they can't save.
For most once the rent is paid theres nothing left, and thats with two people working full time....sad but true.

Maybe it varies then between different areas/regions. My tenants have to submit all combined incomes and if below a certain level, they will not be offered a tenancy.
I suppose once you have a family holiday and do a few other bits there ain't much left, but I suppose it can be done if you have a really tight 5 years...but that would be hard to do for most.
And to avoid that you normally have to carry on living with family...
