I am building an extension which requires 3 universal beams. To comply with the regulations do they need to be bolted together?

I have heard conflicting arguments to this and cannot find a definitive answer!! Some people do this whilst others don't.

As an aside why would you bolt them together anyway? The only reason I can think of doing this is to try and reduce them moving apart but I cannot see how they can if they are bricked together at the ends??!!??!!

Can someone shed some light on this please?

Thanks

NEED MORE INFO'

er what info do you need :?:

There are three UB's measuing 178 x 102 x 19 and are 2.5m in length sitting on top of 440 x 440 x 100 padstones underneath the end wall of the house supporting a solid brick wall and a chimmey.

What else am I missing?

Incidentally places where u beams are used in construction:

Lofts.

Walls

Floors.

Basements.

Drains.

Roofs.

Each of the above has countless connotations.

Thanks for your help.

What is the main reason for some having to be bolted together? Is it due to long lengths and the risk if them moving apart? Or is this just some people being over cautious?

The only thing i can think of a situation whereby lintels would need to be connected, is if the building needed to gain restraint or tie-back from the lintel arrangement.

You need to ask Shytalkz, and he is in your neck o' the woods.

P.S. aside from the obvious of course, that it is a singular support that has been installed in sections. 8)
