Okay here goes. Mid life crisis project about to be started so would welcome some help!

I want to build a summer house, approx 2.4m x 4.8m. Planned on building stud walls using 3”x2” timber. That is not the complicated part right?!

Roof is going to be very slightly pitched (about 15 degrees). Roof trusses every 600 mm with and 18mm roof of exterior ply. Roofing to be felt shingles.

1) Do I need to underlay under the ply with a membrane or will nails make all this pointless?
2) Do the felt shingles go straight onto ply or would you advise cheap roofing felt to start with?
3) Stud walls to be 400mm to 600mm apart? Would you recommend rock wool insulation. Exterior would be tongue and groove cladding, internal 9mm ply. Do I need any kind of waterproofing membrane anywhere?
4) Floor to be 12-18mm ply and then some nicer wood flooring.
5) What’s the feeling re stud wall, screws or angled nails?

All a piece of cake or am I deluded.

Thanks all, if I don't build this then I have to take the motorbike route to chill my mid life crisis. Summer house preferable as I am born to be mild.

Apologies for double posting, not sure which forum to put this in?

Motorcycling can be as mild as you want! Don't let the idiotic sunday morning brigade racing like maniacs on brand new gsxr's and first time out leathers fool you.

As for your summer house do a bit of searching on the forum and come back with any specific queries. There's plenty of know how to go around!

1 and 2 your pitch could do with being a little steeper, membranes/ felt are only really suitable for a angle that shallow. You really want to get up around 25 for any type of tiles.

3. Others may have a bit more expertise here but i would be thinking outside to in -cladding -- tyvek or other breather membrane -- small cavity --inner stud with insulation between studs-- vapour barrier (not necessary if you use foil backed celotex and tape joints) -- ply/pb

4. maybe beef that up to 18mm at least or even 25mm

5. skew nailing is grand! ever tried to get skewed 4 inch nails out?

Read the OP again, he has stated that he intends to use felt shingles for the roof !!!

DOH apologies missed the 'Felt' i read shingles and thought timber!

All the same calm down john.

Thanks all for the tips, plan to be a nail skewing expert soon and may well beef up the flooring up to 25mm
