How can i remove the tar and tape still left on the wall from previous DIY botch repairs by previous owner?

Am having building works done and proper flashing installed - yet the old tape will show above the new roof line.

Any ideas how I can get rid of this sticky mess???

PS - our builder doesn't think an acid cleaner will do it, we're happy to spend some hours on it ourselves and save their expensive labour costs for 'proper' work.

White spirits readily dissolves bitumen based products.

I don't think you will have much joy with hydrochloric acid though.
